DEAR READERS, In times of increasing uncertainty in the labour market, caused by factors such as digitali- sation and economic fluctuations, it is important for you to give your employees a sense of security. Employees should also be encouraged in their day-to-day roles. When the commit- ment of employees diminishes, their performance can fluctuate and illness rates can rise, while customer satisfaction decreases. It’s a problem many of us have experienced first-hand. How can you support your staff and colleagues alike to become the best co-workers they can possibly be? The key to engaging your employees, and to making your business future-proof, is motivation. Why? Because everybody has something that drives him or her, something that makes them go the extra mile. But, spoiler alert: for most employees, a high salary is no longer their top priority. So how can we motivate staff? How can you sup- port your staff and colleagues alike to become the best co-workers they can possibly be? In this issue, WE explores employee motiva- tion and similar themes. First stop on the motivational journey: how renowned laboratory owners from three different countries have made changes to increase employee motivation and engagement (see page 6). We promise you will find some inspiration for your laboratory. As some of you may already know, an attractive working environment, equipped with the latest technology, is now a bigger draw than ever for employees. Therefore, WE will showcase an example of a US laboratory (see page 16). But is this enough to motivate your employees to the fullest? Not quite. Experience has shown that employee motivation depends strongly on the role of management: only those who go ahead motivated can inspire others. Following this principle, our article “What really drives us” (see page 9) offers ideas for increasing your own motivation. Another challenge for lab owners is that different generations of employees are motivated by different things. For example, today’s young employees have very different demands on their workplace than the employees of ten years ago. They have grown up with digital tech- nologies; they want to try new things and surpass themselves with the new possibilities digi- tal technology can bring. FIVE IDEAS TO MOTIVATE YOURSELF WHAT REALLY DRIVES US Especially after a long holiday, there is a danger of getting stuck in a motivation hole. Daniel H. Pink, an American science journalist and former speechwriter for Al Gore, explains in his book what he sees as the three true elements of motivation. In “Drive: The surprising truth about what motivates us”, Pink emphasises that the carrot-and-stick approach no longer motivates people in the long term. The reason is simple: in the past, most work consisted of simple, repetitive tasks. Today, however, creative and innovative skills are in high demand. Three elements are FIVE TIPS FOR MOTIVATION decisive in determining motivation for these tasks: Autonomy. People who decide for themselves what, where, how and when to work are much more motivated. Pink argues that employees should not be paid according to the hours they work but based on specific results. Mastery. We want to do one thing better and better – and strive for mastery. The prerequisite is that we believe we can improve our performance through our own efforts. Mastery requires effort and strategic practice. But this effort can be satisfying and give mean- ing to life. Purpose. Whatever we do, it must have purpose for us. We – not others – must recognise the purpose in our tasks. Ask yourself what is important to you and you will be more committed to the cause. 1 2 3 4 5 Set achievable goals. Define measurable and realistic goals. Inner attitude. Approach your task positively. Motivation through visualisation. Imagine you can see your success in front of your inner eye. Try positioning rewarding or inspiring pictures visibly at your workplace as motivational aids. Motivation through reward. Reward yourself even for small, partial successes. This will help your brain connect your work to something positive. Motivation through time pressure. WHAT YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT ... ... CERAMICS Working with ceramics is an integral part of everyday laboratory life. Nevertheless, questions about how to correctly handle materials come up constantly – among both trainees and experts. Here, dental technician Kerstin Wagner offers valuable tips on working with ceramics. 1 Temperature differences may cause the framework to warp. How can this be avoided? In the case of solid frameworks, heat rate should be reduced in order to avoid temperature differences on the framework. 2 To check the temperature of the ceramic furnace, a firing sample can be fired using Transpa Clear on platinum foil on top of the firing pins during the first dentin firing. If the ceramic remains milky, the temperature is too low or the vacuum was not able to develop completely (check pump, check seals). If it is transparent but the edges are round, the temperature is too high. So, each furnace can be adjusted precisely to the ceramic in question. 3 4 To avoid tensions when cooling larger objects, I leave them on the firing table until they have reached the starting temperature. If you use foreign fluids for layering materials, a firing sample should be a solid working component. This is especially true in cases where you are working with ceramics with a low firing temperature. This ensures that the liquid burns out without leaving any residue and that the ceramic does not turn grey. 5 When selecting a framework material, it is important to coordinate the CTE and the manufacturer’s specifications in advance. At any rate, the CTE value of the ceramic should be lower than that of the alloy. Competition in the dental market is intense in 3D printing. This is boosting the pace of development. For example, if a customer needs a provisional denture immediately that will remain in the mouth for 6-8 months, a printed prosthesis is completely acceptable. What personally impresses you most about 3D printed dentures? What impresses me more than anything else are the enormous savings in time and effort during production. All in all, making printed full dentures involves just five steps and the manufacturing process takes less than two hours. It is therefore considerably faster than the analogue pro cedure – the printing of the denture base takes about 53 minutes, while the printing of the teeth takes another 25 minutes. While analogue production usually requires five or more patient visits, digital production only requires two. In combination with digital impression taking, the manufacturing process is even quicker. Furthermore, 3D printing full dentures saves resources, since considerably less material is used than in analogue production. What does Kulzer’s 3D printing technology has to offer? Right now, I am seeing a trend towards stronger printing resins and a greater number of indications. New compo- nents with different light wavelengths are being developed for this purpose. The current priority is to master chall en- ges related to the physical properties of light-curing ma te- rials. But with the speed at which we are working on 3D printing technology today, I am confident we will soon be able to eliminate any limitations almost as quickly as we encounter them. 2 DESIGN: The prosthesis is designed in the CAD software. 3 PRINT: Then the prosthesis can be printed in cara Print 4.0 using the dima Print materials. In order to create the applicable printing fluid, monomers and – depending on the colour – colour shade, pigments are first mixed with a roller and a tumble mixer. After this chemical composition, product experts perform a test print with Kulzer’s cara Print 4.0. The test model is then subjected to a thorough inspection process where criteria such as bending and breaking strength, heat resistance and fitting accuracy are evaluated. Furthermore, a thermal cycling test is carried out at 5 degrees to 55 degrees. The tests on dima Print Stone beige were a complete success, so the product was made available to dental technicians in May 2019. This new resin provides dental technicians with results that are in no way inferior to traditional plaster models.
